Don't be bashful, this is Asheville Where you can do most anything you like Don't be bashful, this is Asheville You won't see any rules posted so do what you feel to be right I moved to this little old mountain town A band needed a bass player so I came down Got to a bar by the water and what did I see But a whole lots'a hippies that looked kinda like me They was all jammin' and having their fun Drinking local made beer, they came and offered me some Then an old bearded feller who baked his own bread Looked out from under his hat and this is what he said He said don't be bashful, this is Asheville Where you can do most anything you like Don't be bashful, this is Asheville You won't see any rules posted so do what you feel to be right That party wound down in a week or so And everybody went home but I had nowhere to go I started wandering those streets, all crooked and bent Figured someone somewhere would have a room to rent Sure enough I ran into a forestry crew They pointed the way to a big ol' group house they knew The landlord herself was there fixing it up Drinking dynamite coffee from an old wooden cup She showed me the room she said would be mostly mine If I didn't mind sharing it with roaches sometimes But I'd been so moved by my new hometown's spirit I sang it so loud that the termites would hear it Don't be bashful, this is Asheville Where you can do most anything you like Don't be bashful, this is Asheville You won't see any rules posted so do what you feel to be right Now not much has changed, we're still having our fun Going out to Black Balsam to catch the rising sun Staying up late with the Hank Williams shrine 'Til the Two Headed Dog says it's closing time But you know the best part of life in this land Is sharing the good times and extending a hand So I hope y'all will come out and visit and stay And sing it or shout it or whistle or say Don't be bashful, this is Asheville Where you can do most anything you like Don't be bashful, this is Asheville You won't see any rules posted so do what you feel to be right You won't see any rules posted, do whatever you feel to be right

I'm walking down the road looking for a memory Of something I knew back then But the more I keep thinking, the more I keep sinking Into a hole without an end I keep running around, dancing in those circles Chasing my own tail Hoping it'll show me the sign I've been seeing The one where I'm not in jail Life's a joy to live but death makes you give Everything you love and more Greet it with a grin, maybe just sin It'll always come through the door I lost one friend and another when I dried my last tear Gramps pushed daisies, Grams got crazies Damn this has been a shit year Oh it starts with a line, here comes Father Time Saying boy you ain't got long But I made money, found a honey Did I go about this all wrong? I'm walking down the road looking for a memory Of something I knew back then But the more I keep thinking, the more I keep sinking Into a hole without an end I keep running around, dancing in those circles Chasing my own tail Hoping it'll show me the sign I've been seeing The one where I'm not in jail Since the day you're born, you know you'll be torn Away from those you love Reapers knock, loved ones squawk Saying Lord let me live above I know it's depressing, it helps not stressing About the only truth Death will come, life's all done Nobody holds onto their youth You best start living, while the living's still giving All you need to be free Count your blessings, heed this lesson And live while you're still able to see I'm walking down the road looking for a memory Of something I knew back then But the more I keep thinking, the more I keep sinking Into a hole without an end I keep running around, dancing in those circles Chasing my own tail Hoping it'll show me the sign I've been seeing The one where I'm not in jail

I saw my daddy hit my momma when I was young He'd fly off the handle every time that he got drunk Then come right back with the tears there in his eyes Begging for a chance to explain his darker side He'd say love gets the better of us all sometimes It'll give you sight, then turn around and make you blind You can try to stay sane with all your might But love gets the better of us all sometimes I've got a dear old friend who's almost gone today 'Cause his one and only started wandering and went astray But he still waits by the door, praying that she'll find her way I'd try to talk to him out of it, but there's just one thing he'd say Love gets the better of us all sometimes It'll give you sight, then turn around and make you blind You can try to stay sane with all your might But love gets the better of us all sometimes I'm no different even though I try and try To leave it alone and let love pass me by I pretend to be strong but deep down I understand I can't fight this feeling more than anybody can 'Cause love gets the better of us all sometimes It'll give you sight, then turn around and make you blind You can try to stay sane with all your might But love gets the better of us all sometimes

We've been on the road for twenty-two days Not that anybody's countin' but we've got twelve more left to do And you know I miss your kisses and your suppers But there's just a couple comforts I miss even more than you 'Cause hell is a gas station bathroom One that ain't been cleaned in a year or five You know I'd like to make it down to Macon But that's only if we make it out of here alive Well there's nothing wrong with breakfast at this Citgo Though that Danish is a month old it'll fill me just the same And you could do worse for friends, than Jenny at the counter We come through Rock Hill so often she knows me and Tim by name Aw but hell is a gas station bathroom One that ain't been cleaned in a year or five You know I'd like to make it down to Macon But that's only if we make it out of here alive So peel on out, let's get back to the highway 'Cause there's a rest stop a hundred eighteen miles from here Remember last time? They just finished cleaning But in the stall I found someone's unfinished beer But hell is a gas station bathroom One that ain't been cleaned in a year or five You know I'd like to make it down to Macon But that's only if we make it out of here alive Said that's only if we make it out of here alive

Hand me down, my walking cane Hand me down, my walking cane Hand me down, my walking cane I'm gonna leave on the morning train My sins, they have overtaken me I got drunk, got thrown in jail I got drunk, got thrown in jail I got drunk, got thrown in jail Ain't nobody going pay my bail My sins, they have overtaken me So hand me down my jug of corn Hand me down my jug of corn Hand me down my jug of corn I've been drunk since I was born My sins, they have overtaken me If I die in Tennessee If I die in Tennessee If I die in Tennessee Ship me back by c.o.d My sins, they have over taken me Hand me down, my walking cane Hand me down, my walking cane Hand me down, my walking cane I'm gonna leave on the morning train My sins, they have overtaken me Hell is deep, you know it's wide Hell is deep, you know it's wide Hell is deep and it's wide Aint got no back or no sides My sins, they have overtaken me Hand me down, my walking cane Hand me down, my walking cane Hand me down, my walking cane I'm gonna leave on the morning train My sins, they have overtaken me

Well I think I'm through with thinking Think I'm just getting started drinking 'Cause drinking does much more for me than thinking ever could Though it's been years now since you left me I'm still haunted by your memory Think I'll be drinking 'stead of thinking 'til I'm through Each time that I remember how sweet you were to me Starts a thought process that only ends in endless misery But each time that I walk down to my corner liquor store I'm back in the grip of the only sweetness that I love even more So I think I'm through with thinking Think I'm just getting started drinking 'Cause drinking does much more for me than thinking ever could Though it's been years now since you left me I'm still haunted by your memory Think I'll be drinking 'stead of thinking 'til I'm through I know my friends are saying that I'm racing to my grave They say if I'd just use my head, my life could still be saved But the only thing I care about is the way I feel tonight And it's another bottle not another thought that'll set these feelings right So I think I'm through with thinking Think I'm just getting started drinking 'Cause drinking does much more for me than thinking ever could Though it's been years now since you left me I'm still haunted by your memory Think I'll be drinking 'stead of thinking 'til I'm through

I wrote my life down by hand Chapters blow away like sand Always looking for some truth Dreams in my mind, say there's no use Simple things blow my mind Time is just inherently sublime A parallel universe to find Father Time, can we make the climb Fly me to the moon So I can the Stars of June Let me touch the sun So I die before I'm young The rains come and they go The wind whistles as trees blow Fairy tales in disguise Tell me everything is gonna be alright Will the Ark save again Or leave us dead in sin Just open up your mind A muse will never hide Fly me to the moon So I can the Stars of June Let me touch the sun So I die before I'm young
